A refrigerator is usually the first appliance named in a backup-power conversation. Fair enough: warm milk is a persuasive sales manager. But “Can a 5kWh battery run my fridge overnight?” still needs more than a yes-or-no answer.
The short answer is that a 5kWh-class battery may support a refrigerator plus a disciplined group of essential loads. The useful answer depends on measured energy use, startup demand, usable battery energy, system losses and what else is running at the same time.
Start with energy, not the label on the door
A refrigerator cycles on and off. Its nameplate may show electrical limits, but it does not tell you exactly how much energy the appliance will consume through a warm night. Age, room temperature, door opening, thermostat setting and compressor condition all matter.
Use a plug-in energy meter where appropriate, or ask a qualified electrician to measure the circuit. Record at least one representative day. A guess based on a different refrigerator is just a borrowed problem.
Do not forget startup demand
The compressor may draw more power for a short moment when it starts. Battery capacity in kWh describes stored energy; it does not prove that the inverter can handle every instantaneous load. Confirm continuous output, surge behavior and the combined demand of loads that may start together.
Build an honest overnight load list
- Refrigerator or freezer: measured daily energy and startup demand

- Essential lighting: lamp wattage and hours
- Fans: speed setting and quantity
- Water pump: running and startup demand
- Kettle, oven or heater: normally excluded unless separately checked

- Which circuits must remain available?

- What reserve should remain at the end of the night?
