The lights are on, the grid is off and the battery indicator is heading south. What happens next?
The honest answer depends on the battery, inverter, control settings and connected loads. A good project defines that behavior before the first outage, while everyone is calm and the kettle is not lobbying for priority.
Low state of charge is a control decision
Systems normally use limits to protect the battery and preserve a chosen reserve. The displayed percentage may not represent every unit of electrochemical energy inside the enclosure. Usable energy, protection margins and control logic are model-specific.
Ask which settings the installer and user can change, which are protected by the manufacturer and how those settings affect expected operation.
What may happen as energy runs low?
Depending on the configured system, it may warn the user, reduce available functions, shed selected loads, disconnect backup output or shut down at a defined threshold. Do not assume that every home battery restarts in the same way.
- Confirm the reserve setting used during normal grid operation.
- Identify the low-state warning method.
- Check whether nonessential loads can be shed automatically.
- Confirm the shutdown threshold and sequence.
- Check what happens if a large load starts near the threshold.
- Confirm whether restart is automatic when grid or solar returns.
- Record the minimum charging condition before backup resumes.
Load shedding beats surprise shutdown
Prioritizing circuits gives the remaining energy a job. Refrigeration, communications and selected lighting may stay above discretionary loads. High-demand heating, cooking, pumps or air conditioning require separate review.
Restart behavior deserves its own test
When power returns, the system may need to recharge while household loads also resume. Ask how it handles grid recovery, solar recovery, staged load reconnection and repeated outages.
Put it in the handover
The owner should receive the reserve setting, essential-load list, shutdown and restart behavior, alarm meanings, safe user actions and support contact. Test the agreed sequence during commissioning where permitted.
