How to Size a Lithium Battery for a UPS: Power, DC Bus Voltage and Runtime
Learn what UPS power, critical load, DC bus voltage, runtime, charging and communication data are needed to configure a compatible lithium UPS battery system.

To size a lithium battery for a UPS, start with four inputs: the UPS brand and exact model, UPS rated power, DC bus voltage and required backup time. Then review the actual critical load, charging parameters, communication and installation requirements. These details determine whether a battery platform is suitable before its capacity or cabinet format is selected.
This guide helps UPS integrators, distributors and critical-power project buyers prepare a useful configuration request. It does not provide a universal replacement formula or imply that a lithium battery can work with every UPS. Use the LinkPower UPS Battery Systems Hub to compare the available routes, and have the final electrical configuration reviewed against the actual equipment documentation.
1. Identify the Exact UPS Before Selecting a Battery
Send the UPS brand, full model designation and rated power. Include the battery-interface pages from its manual when available. Similar-looking UPS units can have different DC bus arrangements, charging settings and communication requirements. A broad description such as “server-room UPS” is not enough to confirm the battery platform.
For an existing installation, describe the current battery arrangement and the reason for replacement. For a new project, state whether the UPS has already been selected. If its specifications remain open, identify that uncertainty in the inquiry so the configuration review can distinguish confirmed equipment requirements from purchasing preferences.
2. Separate UPS Rated Power From the Actual Critical Load
The UPS rated power describes the UPS equipment's design scope. The critical load is the equipment that must remain powered during an interruption. Those figures may differ. State the actual protected load and which devices are included rather than assuming that the UPS always operates at its nameplate rating.
Describe normal operation and any important changes in load. Explain whether the backup plan covers an entire facility, a server group, industrial controls or selected essential circuits. This helps the review address discharge demand and the required operating sequence without treating every connected device as an identical load.
3. Confirm the DC Bus Voltage and Architecture
The battery must match the UPS DC bus requirements. Provide the nominal voltage, operating voltage window and the required connection arrangement. Where applicable, confirm whether the UPS requires a two-wire or three-wire configuration. A nominal voltage label alone does not establish electrical compatibility.
Do not choose a system simply because another project used the same voltage or cabinet size. LinkPower's low-voltage UPS battery family covers selected 25.6V–192V platforms. The high / middle-voltage family spans 204.8V–768V. These are configuration routes, not interchangeable batteries. The correct route follows the actual UPS architecture and power requirement.
4. Define What the Required Runtime Must Achieve
State the required backup time together with the critical load. Explain what happens at the end of that period: controlled shutdown, restoration of the main supply, transfer to a generator or another planned operating step. A runtime target is more useful when the project team understands the operational purpose behind it.
Runtime depends on the protected load, UPS efficiency, DC bus voltage, battery capacity, discharge rate and selected system configuration. Available 5-, 15- or 30-minute configuration classes do not guarantee the same duration at every load. Capacity and discharge capability must be reviewed together. A larger Ah value alone cannot establish a reliable backup-time commitment.
5. Review the Charging Window and Recharge Requirement
A replacement review must include the UPS charging parameters. Send the available charging voltage and current information, supported settings and any battery-related limits described in the UPS documentation. The battery's charging requirements and protection behavior need to fit the intended integration.
Also explain the expected operating pattern. A site facing occasional interruptions has a different planning context from one with repeated outages and limited recharge opportunities. Describe the required recovery between events, but do not assume a recharge time until the charger, selected battery configuration and operating conditions have been reviewed.
6. Confirm Communication, Monitoring and Alarm Requirements
List the communication required by the UPS and the project monitoring system. CAN, RS485, dry contact and LCD options are available by configuration within the UPS battery families. That does not mean every model includes every interface, or that a matching connector automatically provides the required protocol.
Identify which battery status information and alarms the project needs to monitor. Send the relevant interface specification when available. Clarify how the UPS should respond to battery status or protection events. Communication belongs in the compatibility review rather than being left as a detail to resolve after the battery has been purchased.
7. Check the Physical Integration and Commissioning Scope
Provide the available rack or cabinet space, installation environment, access constraints and quantity. Include the site layout and cable-routing context when useful. The physical arrangement needs to accommodate the selected system and its installation and service requirements.
Electrical protection, connection, installation and commissioning require a project-specific review by qualified personnel. This guide is a purchasing checklist, not installation instructions. Confirm the final scope, system documentation and responsibilities with the UPS integrator before equipment is ordered or an existing battery arrangement is changed.

Common Buyer Questions
Can a lithium battery directly replace an existing UPS battery?
Not automatically. Check the UPS charging window, DC bus architecture, required discharge power, runtime and communication requirements. The existing battery arrangement and UPS documentation are part of that review.
Should I start with kWh, Ah or voltage?
Start with the UPS and its DC bus requirements, then the critical load and backup time. Capacity is selected within a compatible electrical platform. None of those labels alone confirms the complete system.
Does a larger UPS always require a high-voltage battery?
Follow the actual UPS DC bus and power architecture. The application name, facility size or cabinet appearance cannot determine the correct battery voltage without the equipment specifications.
What if some technical inputs are not yet available?
Identify what is confirmed and what remains open. Send the UPS documentation and available load information first. A preliminary review can identify missing inputs, but final configuration and runtime cannot be confirmed from incomplete assumptions.
Request a Configuration That Can Progress to Quotation
Send your UPS model, rated power, DC bus voltage and required backup time. Add the critical load, charging parameters, communication, installation conditions and quantity. This lets the review focus on compatibility and configuration rather than a generic battery recommendation.
